Which Gift Cards Actually Work

Not every gift card works at casinos. The type of card matters more than where you bought it.

Accepted

Not Accepted

  • Store-specific cards (Target, Best Buy, iTunes)
  • Amazon gift cards (separate method, offshore only)
  • Restaurant and retail gift cards
  • Cards without a Visa or Mastercard logo
  • Expired or zero-balance cards

The card must have a Visa or Mastercard network logo on the front. The casino processes it like a regular card transaction. Store gift cards without a network logo go through a completely different system that casinos do not support.

Register Your Card Before You Deposit

This is the #1 reason gift card deposits get declined. Most Visa and Mastercard gift cards ship without a name or address attached. Online casinos require AVS (Address Verification) to process the transaction. If there is no name on file, the deposit fails.

1

Find the registration URL

Look on the back of the card or the packaging. It will say something like "Register at mygiftcardsite.com" or have a sticker with a URL.

2

Enter your name and billing address

Use the same name and address you used to sign up at the casino. The AVS check compares these two records.

3

Wait 10 to 15 minutes

Some card issuers need a few minutes to update their system. Try your deposit after a short wait. If it still fails, try again after an hour.

The $500 Cap and Hidden Costs

Gift cards are capped at $500. Casinos do not charge fees, but the cards themselves cost money before you even deposit.

Activation fee: $3 to $6

Every Visa or Mastercard gift card has an activation fee at purchase. A $100 card costs $103 to $106. That is a 3 to 6% tax on your deposit.

$500 max per card

Want to deposit $1,000? You need 2 cards and pay 2 activation fees. Some casinos let you stack multiple cards in one deposit.

Leftover balances

If you deposit $45 from a $50 card, the remaining $5 is stuck on the card. Use exact amounts or deposit the full card balance.

Gift Cards Are Deposit-Only: Plan Your Cashout

You cannot withdraw to a gift card. Before you deposit, set up a withdrawal method. Your options depend on whether you are at a regulated or offshore casino.

Gift cards work at both regulated US casinos and offshore sites. But the experience is different.

How to Deposit with a Gift Card

1

Buy a Visa or Mastercard gift card

Get one from Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Target, or any retail store. Check that it has a Visa or Mastercard logo. Cards range from $25 to $500.

2

Register the card online

Go to the URL on the back of the card. Enter your name and address. Use the same info you used at the casino. Wait 10 to 15 minutes.

3

Go to the casino cashier

Pick a casino from our list above. Sign in and open the deposit page. Select Visa or Mastercard (not "gift card") as your method.

4

Enter the card details

Type the 16-digit card number, expiration date, and CVV from the back. Enter the amount you want to deposit, up to the card balance.

5

Confirm and play

Hit deposit. Funds arrive instantly. If it is declined, double-check that the card is registered and the name matches your casino account.

Why Gift Cards Get Declined (and How to Fix It)

Card not registered

The most common issue. Register your name and address at the URL on the back of the card. Wait 10 to 15 minutes before trying again.

Fix: Register the card, then retry

Issuer blocks gambling

Some card issuers (especially Netspend-issued and some Vanilla cards) block transactions coded as gambling. This is the issuer's decision, not the casino's.

Fix: Try a different brand of gift card

Balance too low

The deposit amount exceeds your card balance. Gift cards do not show pending holds, so you may have less than you think.

Fix: Check your balance online, deposit a lower amount

Wrong card type selected

You selected "Gift Card" or "Prepaid" in the cashier. Most casinos process gift cards as regular Visa or Mastercard transactions.

Fix: Select Visa or Mastercard instead

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gift cards actually work at online casinos?
Open-loop Visa and Mastercard gift cards work at most casinos. Store-specific cards like Amazon, Target, or iTunes do not work. Casino-branded cards from DraftKings, BetMGM, and Game On are also accepted at their respective sites.
Do I have to register the gift card before depositing?
Yes, most casinos require it. Go to the card issuer's website and register a name and zip code that matches your casino account. Skipping this step is the #1 reason for declined deposits.
How do I cash out if gift cards are deposit-only?
You need a separate withdrawal method like bank transfer, check by mail, or crypto. Some regulated casinos also offer Prizeout, which converts your withdrawal into retail gift cards from stores like Lowe's or Starbucks.
Why does my Visa gift card keep getting declined?
The most common reasons are: unregistered card, balance too low for the deposit amount, or the card issuer blocks gambling merchant codes. Vanilla Visa cards tend to have the fewest issues. If blocked, call the number on the back of the card.
What does a gift card cost beyond the face value?
Retail stores charge a one-time activation fee of $2.95 to $6.95 depending on the card value. Casinos do not add any deposit fees on top of that. A $50 gift card typically costs $53-$57 total at checkout.
Can I use gift cards at regulated US casinos like BetMGM or DraftKings?
Yes. All 6 regulated casinos on our list accept gift cards. DraftKings and BetMGM also sell their own branded gift cards at stores like CVS, Walmart, and 7-Eleven in legal states.
What is the maximum I can deposit with a gift card?
Most gift cards top out at $500 face value, and casino limits match that. You can use multiple cards in one session, but some casinos cap prepaid deposits at $500-$1,000 per day.
Will my bank see that I deposited at an online casino?
No. Gift cards are not linked to your bank account, so no gambling transactions appear on your bank statement. The only record is the retail purchase of the card itself, which shows as a store purchase.

Responsible Gambling

Gambling is for adults 21+ in US regulated states. This page includes both regulated and offshore casinos. Regulated casinos are licensed by state gaming commissions. Offshore casinos are not licensed in the US and offer fewer player protections. Gift card deposits cannot be reversed or charged back. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit ncpgambling.org. Information last verified on March 28, 2026.
